Hi, I’m Ashley Wells.

After more than two decades working inside some of the most demanding environments in marketing and advertising, I kept noticing the same pattern: the work that truly worked was always rooted in a genuine understanding of the humans on the other end of it. Not a vague demographic profile or a 2-dimensional persona built 10 years ago, but an actual, complicated, context-rich human being making decisions in today’s noisy world.

Anthro 401 is built on that belief.

I spent years leading Communications Strategy at some of the country’s most respected independent agencies, partnering with major national brands on the kind of upstream strategic work that shapes how organizations think about and talk to their audiences. Since going independent 4 years ago, I’ve brought that same depth of practice with me to agencies and brands across the US: the rigor, the frameworks, and the hard-won instinct for what actually moves people.

What I’ve found, working with both brand teams and agency leaders, is that the most persistent problem isn’t a shortage of information. It’s the gap between information and clarity, between having data and knowing what to do with it. Organizations sit on research that doesn’t actually inform action. Insights that live in decks nobody reads. Audiences described differently depending on who’s in the room.

My work closes that gap. I help clients understand who their audiences truly are, map the journeys that shape their decisions, and build the communications strategies that translate that understanding into direction and plans teams can act on. The output isn’t just sharper insight, but a shared foundation: clearer personas, better-mapped journeys, more resonant communications frameworks, and the kind of alignment that means fewer meetings spent re-litigating the basics.

If you’ve found your way here, you’re probably at an inflection point where working from assumptions or outdated data no longer feels acceptable. Whether you lead a brand team navigating real complexity or an agency that needs deeper strategic footing, I’d love to talk about what clarity could make possible for you.
